An Example for All

While going through the airport in Monrovia, Liberia recently, one of the officers asked me to present some papers. As I reached into my bag, another officer said, “Oh, this is Madam Gbowee. She is fine.” I thanked them for attempting to help. I then made it known that I did have the document in question. Another officer standing by said, “Yes, madam! I know you always have your documents intact; that is why you are an example for all of us.”

Those words struck me. I looked at the officer and smiled beneath my mask, hoping she saw the smile in my eyes. I was grateful for the compliment but terrified by the expectations and the moral burden associated with such respect. As terrifying as the expectations may be, I am fully aware of my responsibilities as a public figure, role model, mentor, mother, and most importantly, a person of faith.

The titles and names I bear mean I must respectably conduct my life and business. I must be constantly aware of the many eyes, ears, and hearts tied to me.

Does this mean I am infallible? Of course, the answer is a resounding NO! However, it means that I must remain grounded in my faith, rooted in my community, and humble in all my endeavors. It also means that I must be deliberate / intentional about doing the right thing every opportunity I get.

“You are an example to all of us” is the message to all of us leaders and mentors of the next generation.

The next generation is watching – watching intently – to see how we “braid our old mat” so that they can model their “new mats,” inspired by some of our patterns. If we weave and braid arrogance, corruption, lies, and recklessness, the next generation will most likely follow suit. Our call is to lead, teach, mentor, and most importantly, live as “We are all examples for the rest of society.”

“To whom much is given, much is expected in return.”
